Produced by Kim Pratt and directed by Christopher Flaherty, Counter Convention: A Free New York Special is a documentary video that was compiled from the separate segments used to create four Free New York episodes about the protests of the Republican National Convention in Manhattan between August 28 and September 2, 2004. Specifically, Episode #360: It's About Peace; Episode #361: Right To Protest; Episode #362: The Battle of New Yorktown; and Episode #363: We'll See You In November. After the episodes were first shown on Manhattan Neighborhood Network during September and October, 2004, they were edited together to form a 113-minute program that presented the events in roughly chronological order. The groups, events, and persons whom we saw at the protests include Ring Out; Reverend Billy (of the Church of Stop Shopping); Starbucks union organizers; Billionaires for Bush at the "Million Billionaire March"; the United For Peace And Justice March; the "Mouse Bloc" in front of The Lion King on Broadway (including GOP delegates); protestors from the P.B.A.; Donna Lieberman (of the New York Civil Liberties Union); the "Men In Black Bloc" defending the honor of Johnny Cash; Triumph (the Insult Comic Dog); Jello Biafra; the Missile Dick Chicks; Greene Dragon; the Vigil for the Fallen at Union Square; members of Veterans for Peace and Vietnam Veterans Against The War; an alien; the World's Longest Unemployment Line; Randi Weingarten (of the United Federation of Teachers); Axis of Eve at "Operation Expose and Depose"; and for the grand finale at Union Square--the people of the City of New York as themselves.
Counter Convention had its world premiere on May 5, 2005, at the Village East Cinema at 181 2nd Avenue & East 12th Street in Manhattan, New York City, on the closing night of the 2005 New York International Independent Film and Video Festival. We thought this was a once-in-a-lifetime event. Who knew lightning would strike twice?
In other words, Counter Convention is now an official selection of the 2005 HOWL Festival, the 3rd Annual Festival of East Village Arts, and you can join us for a screening at the Pioneer Theater! Here are the full details:
